African Americans are at higher risk for this serious disease than any other race or ethnic group. High blood pressure tends to be more common, happens at an earlier age, and is more severe for many African Americans. The good news is that high blood pressure can be controlled—and better yet, it can be prevented!

The "silent killer" is a major cause for heart disease and contributes to diabetes as well. Both of these are risk factors prevalent in my family. A major problem which I need to get under control.

Hey Viz,

I can relate as I have high blood pressure as well.  It is the main reason why i am a big supporter of relaxation and pampering yourself!

thank you for the link. One year ago, I started mindfulness based stress reduction through meditation and yoge practices. What a difference it has made on my whole being. I have found that the older I get I am turning to alternative medicine and ways of natural healing.

U know viz i think this disorder affects us at earlier ages and more often bcuz of our diets and lifestyles. if we stopped eating all that meat, dairy products and processed foods and smoking and drinking so much it would be a wrap 4 hypertension. also getting in more exercise so we have less stress in our lives would help a whole lot 2. and like amira said we need more water 2...i don't believe that black folks r more at risk from some genetic predisposition. we need 2 stop eating like we're still slaves...now we're slaves 2 our stomachs. and slaves 2 philip morris and his damned newports which r constricting our vessels. and men that ain't no good 4 us at all cuz if blood vessels get constricted then it's harder 4 blood 2 rush into our lower extremities so now the missus ain't getting satisfied...dig? so put down the cigs the meat the dairy the processed food and get on the treadmill and hit those pushups....asap!

I'm glad to see that we are discussing this topic. Some light definitely needs to be shed here. I agree with Insatiableus and Tau on this one. Exercise AND diet go hand-in-hand concerning this and many other diseases. I am feeling Tau 100% on this disease being prevalent in large part because of our lifestyles and diets. Yes, there may exist some genetic predisposition, but if we educated ourselves and lived according to how our ancestors lived, we wouldn't have to worry about these kinds of things the way that we do now.
