Is April truly the cruellest month? Surely not since 1996, when the Academy of American Poets launched the first National Poetry Month. April is National Poetry Month! Explore haiku, hip hop, praise love and extreme spoken word all kinds of poetry....
So for all the poets who love to write.....for the love of poetry what do poetry mean to you express your passion....in poetic form show ya skills and tell us what poetry means to you!

Well Poetry allows me to release my joy or my anger in a constructive but artistic way...But I'm not gonna front..I never thought that I would've been writing about my feelings and expressing my personal matters in poetry form but here I am...I will neva call myself a poet cuz I respect the artform and the people who actually put their blood,sweat, and tears into their craft...I'm jes appreciative that those same people (aka POETS) think that my lil writings are worth reading as I enjoy reading and experiencing everyone elses' poetic pieces...

Stars in the midnight sky
Gives off light to guide
Illumination into the heart of men
Revelation the power of the pen
Ideas and imaginations come from thee
For without you the Bishop could never be
Expression of Love, emotional outlet
Imagery defined, invocation of memories one can never forget
Artistic flavor
Words that I savor
Creative processes rhyme in time
Digestion of words in my mind
Dogma of literary architecture
Leads to poetic lecture
Freedom granted through intellectual yet romantic release
This is what I deem poetry to be.

Well let me just say...beautifully done Bishop! You never disappoint.
And as for my feelings about poetry, I would have to mimic some of the same sentiments that Drizz shared. I not only never thought I would be expressing my innermost thoughts/ feelings through poetry; but some time ago, I didn't think that I could write poetry. So, I guess I don't really think of myself as a "poet" either. However, I do feel blessed to have found this forum and the courage to share my words with everyone. It is indeed gratifying to have people show their love and appreciation for my work. Poetry, to me, means being able to share a part of myself that the world might otherwise have never known.

Poetry is my first love…it is my relaxation from a world of drama… it is my freedom
From stress and bullshit…I love to write love the dreams I create… the feeling of peace that runs through my veins as I write each word thinking of each verse… enter into my own world…my first love poetry and the play of words to create a masterpiece that brings smiles and can invade the mental….poetry is my peace a gift from my Heavenly Father that I love to share with others….

Poetry is new to me... but what I've found in poetry is it allows me to express, and share a part of me. Poetry also allows me to go far away to a place that only a selected few truly understand. I have come to enjoy puttin a part of my down on paper and in some uncanny way poetry for me is healing.

| Poetry means to me, the bare essence of thought, transcribed on paper or verse to show the inner most thoughts or ideas that comes from ones soul.

| POETRY TO ME MEANS ONE WHO IS ABLE TO TELL THIER STORY AND KEEP HOLD OF THE PEOPLE LISTENING. I DON'T CONSIDER MYSELF A POET (AT LEAST NOT YET), BECASUE I KNOW I STILL NEED TO DEVELOP WITH THE WAY I DELIVER MINE. BUT MORE SO THE FACT THAT I'VE BARELEY BEEN DOING THIS FOR A YEAR, NOT EVEN KNOWING I HAD THIS WITHIN ME. IT WASN'T UNTIL I EXERIENCED OPEN MIC FOR THE FIRST TIME BACK IN FEBUARY OF 2006. BUT IRONICALLY AFTER BEING "BITTEN" BY THE POETRY BUG AND WRITING MY FIRST PIECE, VIZHENZ FOUND ME ON BLACKPLANET. DON'T ASK ME HOW SHE KNEW I HAD TALENT TO BE A MEMBER HERE. BUT MORESO, POETRY CAN BE THERAPUTIC. WHATEVER PAIN OR NEGATIVE EMOTIONS A PERSON CAN GO THROUGH, WRITE IT DOWN. 9 TIMES OUT OF 10, PEOPLE WON'T KNOW IT REALLY PERTAINS TO THAT PERSON. To me poetry is pure uninhibited free expression...an extension of the innermost depths of the mind...it reaches people because it is a direct connection to one's spirit and to the universe...a different way of seeing things....a gift from the Creator if you own it, it is your responsibility to hone it...the craft I mean...just because you are not published doesnt mean a thing...I have been writing for years so when people 'play' with poetry it offends me...those that are pimped for the art also irritates the hell out of me...for with poetry you can create whole galaxies and reach the masses and experience the beauty known as creation...with the gift of poetry you are your own therapist...scientist....physicist...it encompasses so much....I thank God for sharing this gift with me....
