Medium… Taking her seat by the window at the Tea Net, Akilah pulled out her laptop to check in on the status of new adventure. Akilah has just become the first black woman millionaire from an E-Book dot.com. Being a writer, poet, activist and mother of four; not educated in the traditional school systems, Akilah was determined to out smart the system.
Four years ago, Akilah had a dream that she would be standing in front a multitude of people in a white suit, speaking. Not knowing the origin or meaning of the dream, Akilah never forgot it and today it was coming true. Today she is schedule to speak to a group of Black women writers to tell them how this all began. The funny thing is she looks nothing like a millionaire and frankly doesn’t give into the image of the money type. She is a 45-year-old divorcee, seeking to help other women with her similar background that had been looking to find their true self and happiness.
After checking the status of her new adventure, Akilah gets an email from her old girlfriend Kennedy. Now Kennedy and Akilah had been friends for what has seemed like forever but technically it’s only been a few years. Akilah met Kennedy at a rally for Gay rights when Kennedy spotted her looking dazed and confused sitting on a bench by herself as two women were walking off after speaking to her. Kennedy had walked over to introduce herself and to see if she were alright. Akilah had been at the park to clear her head and trying to plan what she was going do with her life now that the kids were grown and the silence in the house was too loud. But first Akilah had to make it through this day.
It has been six months since her divorce was finalized, and today would have been her twenty-third anniversary. Not regretting getting the divorce, Akilah was still wondering what was out there for her. In the years prior to her divorce, she had crossed paths with some one whom she feels was meant to be her soul mate. They shared some conversations and like interests and formed a bond of friendship unlike any she has had before…and now she felt it was time and wanted to see him.
After introducing her self and inquiring if Akilah was okay, began to talk and they hit it off. The two found out that they had so much in common and not in common that they instantly became friends. They talked every day for about 7 months straight. Kennedy managed to be the one person that always seems to keep Akilah from losing it all together and now today Kennedy wants to know who the mystery man is in KiKi’s life.
Akilah, whose never had a nick name that anyone would call her… giggles every time she opens an email from Kennedy. Kennedy just happens to be in town and wants to spend a night out with her girl hoping that she can get the dish on what or who had been keeping KiKi in such good spirits.
Wondering what Kofi's plans for tonight were and what he is gonna think when he finds out Kennedy is in town, Akilah calls and asks if he is available to meet with Kennedy and get the initiation over with. Kofi has heard a lot about Kennedy and how much she is a good friend of Akilah and how they met, but he has been anticipating the face to face with her because he is aware that she is gay and that she had had a thing for KiKi but never pursued it because of the friendship. So now tonight is the night that he will have to meet the sister... the guardian… the mother hen. As anxiety begins to build as Kofi examines himself in the mirror he hears Akilah come through the door. Honey, are you ready, she says. Exhaling deep in his chest, Kofi replies, I am on my way.
