Every Tuesday night at the Mirabeau Room, Seattle Poetry Slam hosts a spoken word blow-out. Come early; DJ Whatever spins madness and drinks are cheap. Sign-ups are from 8-8:30pm, followed by an OPEN MIC - an open stage for anyone to share their words with the audience. At 9pm, a FEATURED POET rocks the house. Then, the SLAM - a competition where each poet performs for 3 minutes, earning a score between 0 and 10 awarded by judges from the audience. The winning poet gets a cash prize and advances towards a place on the Seattle team that will challenge 72 other teams from across the U.S. and Canada at the National Poetry Slam. Competition for a place on the team is fierce, making Seattle a top national contender. Seattle consistently makes the semi-final round and has repeatedly made the final round. Seattle Poetry Slam pays all travel and lodging expenses for Seattle team members at the Nationals.
Slam Host: Daemond Arrindell is the Slam Master for Seattle and three-time coach for the Seattle National Slam team. The man who's been pulling the levers behind the curtains of the great and powerful Seattle Slam for 4 years. He is a Poet, organizer, activist and all around nice guy. Daemond is in this for the love of the word: written and spoken, and its power to alter the emotional state of being.
