The Nevada Athletic Commission came down hard Thursday on trainer Roger Mayweather, revoking his license for one year and fining him $200,000 for his role in sparking a melee during the 10th round of the Floyd Mayweather-Zab Judah welterweight fight last Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Roger Mayweather, who can apply for a new license in Nevada next April, must pay the commission the $200,000 -- his entire paycheck for training his nephew for the fight -- by Friday.
His suspension extends throughout the United States because states generally honor suspensions in other states. However, because Mayweather's suspension is a disciplinary one, and not of a medical nature, it is possible he will be allowed to train fighters in other states.
"The commission did what it had to do," said Todd duBoef, the president of Top Rank, which promotes Floyd Mayweather. "Roger was very apologetic. It's a sad day for Roger, who is one of the good guys in boxing. But he committed a deplorable offense and he is being punished for it."
Roger Mayweather, who attended the hearing, couldn't be reached for comment, but he did submit a written letter of apology to the commission before his punishment was meted out.
Judah promoter Don King, who also attended the hearing along with Judah and his father/trainer Yoel Judah, argued that Floyd Mayweather should have been disqualified as soon as Roger Mayweather got onto the ring apron, much less into the ring.
However, the commission upheld the result of the fight, a 12-round unanimous decision victory for Floyd Mayweather.
Although there have been disqualifications when a cornerman has entered the ring during a round, it is not an automatic disqualification under Nevada's rules. According to Nevada's rules, "The referee may, in his discretion, stop a contest or exhibition if an unauthorized person enters the ring or fenced area during a round."
The commission also released Floyd Mayweather's $5 million purse, which it has been holding since Saturday's fight.
Judah's $1 million purse -- much of which will eventually be consumed by the IRS -- continues to be held by the commission, which is still considering whether or not to hold a separate disciplinary hearing for the former undisputed welterweight champion, who was seen on the video tape of the incident punching Mayweather adviser Leonard Ellerbe and charging through Nevada inspectors during the fracas.
This is not the first time Judah has been involved in an incident in a Nevada ring. He was suspended for six months and fined $75,000 following a 2001 TKO loss to Kostya Tszyu. After that loss, Judah was so enraged by referee Jay Nady's stoppage that he threw a ring stool at Nady and shoved a gloved hand under Nady's chin.
According to the commission, Judah's previous behavior in Nevada can be considered when it comes to punishing him for last week's incident.
Roger Mayweather entered the ring with five seconds remaining in the 10th round because he was angry at Judah, who had hit Floyd Mayweather with a blatant low blow followed by a right hand to the back of the head, both dangerous and illegal punches.
As referee Richard Steele called timeout to give Mayweather a chance to recover, Roger Mayweather stormed toward Judah.
That promoted Yoel Judah to also enter the ring. He went straight for Roger Mayweather and threw a punch at him.
Seconds later, the ring was filled with members of the fighter camps and security in a scary free-for-all that came close to sparking a full-scale riot among the 15,170 fans inside the Thomas & Mack Center.
However, with extra security on hand, order was restored after several minutes and the fight continued.
Yoel Judah also faces possible disciplinary action, according to the commission, which plans to review the tape of the incident in more detail.
