Imus apologizes for remarks about Rutgers players
ESPN.com news services

The president of the National Association of Black Journalists on Friday called for the firing of Don Imus for comments he and others on his nationally syndicated radio show made this week about Rutgers women's basketball players.

On his show, produced by WFAN Radio in New York and simulcast on TV by MSNBC, Imus on Wednesday referred to the Rutgers players as "nappy-headed ho's." Rutgers lost to Tennessee on Tuesday night in the NCAA women's championship game.

After Imus described Tennessee's players as "cute," his producer, Bernard McGuirk, went on to call the matchup "the jigaboos vs. the wannabees."

NABJ president Bryan Monroe, who also is the vice president and editorial director for Ebony and Jet magazines in Chicago, said, referring to Imus: "Has he lost his mind? Those comments were beyond offensive. Imus needs to be fired. Today."

In a response given to The New York Times, Imus said people should relax and not worry about "some idiot comment meant to be amusing." He apologized Friday at 6:06 a.m. ET on his show.

" want to take a moment to apologize for an insensitive and ill-conceived remark we made the other morning referring to the Rutgers women's basketball team. It was completely inappropriate, and we can understand why people were offended. Our characterization was thoughtless and stupid, so, and we're sorry."

"We agree with Mr. Imus that this was, in his own words, an 'idiot comment,' " a Rutgers spokesperson said in a statement. "We are very proud of the success of the Rutgers women's basketball team. Coach [C. Vivian] Stringer and the Rutgers players are outstanding ambassadors for this great institution."

Shortly after Imus made his apology, MSNBC issued a statement.

"While simulcast by MSNBC, 'Imus in the Morning' is not a production of the cable network and is produced by WFAN Radio," the statement read. "As Imus makes clear every day, his views are not those of MSNBC. We regret that his remarks were aired on MSNBC and apologize for these offensive comments."

The presidents of the NCAA and Rutgers released a joint statement Friday.

"The NCAA and Rutgers University are offended by the insults on MSNBC's Don Imus program toward the 10 young women on the Rutgers basketball team," the statement read. "It is unconscionable that anyone would use the airways to utter such disregard for the dignity of human beings who have accomplished much and deserve great credit."

EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE COME A LONG WAY FROM THE THE 60'S AND EARLIER, IT'S OBVIOUS THAT THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE WHO'S MINDS ARE STILL IN THAT ERA. MAYBE THIS IS WHAT IS MEANT WITH THE SAYING "IGNORANCE IS BLISS".

He was jes tryna be controversial whether he actually meant wut they had said or not. I jes don't like the bullshyt apology afterwards becuz it wasn't sincere. I probably would've have alil respect for him if he had some balls and stood by his words if thas what he truly believes and wanted to say.

Vacation is exactly what it is!:pullhair: He should be fired or the FCC should hit him in the pockets. I'm really angry about this......and to say he didn't mean black people.....When was the last time you heard any other ethnic group refer to their hair as "nappy" or women as "hoes" for that matter?

:soap:   "I originally missed the jigaboos and wannabees part......WHAT THE %#@$?" wHAT DID HE THINK MEETING WITH AL SHARPTON WAS SUPPOSED TO DO? AND SINCE WHEN IS AL THE VOICE OF ALL AFRICAN AMERICANS?:pullhair: ("I'll step down from the box now ....but I'm really heated")
