OBITUARY
Donald Eugene Cherry was born November 18, 1936 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was one of two children to daisy Lee and Ulysses Cherry. The family migrated to Watts, California four years later.
Don's musical interests were sparked when he was a teenager. His mother bought him his first trumpet from Sears & roebuck when he was 14 years old. Don expressed that the greatest thrill he had was when he "blew his horn for the first time." It was at that time he knew he wanted to become a musician.
Don's thirst for music was never quenched as he traveled from Europe to Africa, Asia, to South America to study with "master musicians." Don was unique in that he wanted to learn the musical style and cultural nuances that each country had to offer, then sharing what he learned with others.
Don's gift was his ability to interpret and teach music so even a child could understand. He enjoyed working with children from various ethnic groups and teaching them to appreciate world music.
Much has been said and written about Don Cherry and his musical accomplishments, but he will be remembered most by his warm smile, humble spirit and charismatic personality.
Don died peacefully October 19, 1995 in Malaga, Spain with family and friends.
Don is survived by: Carleta Hewitt Cherry, Moki Karlsson Cherry; mother, Daisy Lee Mckee; sister Barbara Lawrence; children, Jan Cherry, David Ornette Cherry, Eagle Eye Cherry, Neneh Cherry, Christian Cherry; granddaughters, Amber Hopkins, Naima Karlsson Smith, Tyson McVey, Angela Coley, and many relatives and friends.
