The Watts Prophets did not get the same attention or recognition for raising Black Consciousnees and laying the foundation for "rap music" and New York's The Last Poets.
The group was formed at the Watts Writer's Workshop, an organization started by Budd Schulberg designed to provide a creative outlet in the wake of the 1965 Watts riots. The radical, fiery nature of their work coincided with the emerging Black Power Movement and attracted unfavorable notice by the us government.
The home of the Watts Writer's Project was destroyed by fire in 1975 after having fallen victim to a Cointelpro operation in which the Project was infiltrated by an fbi informant.
