Description, Setting & Narrative
Deirdre Savoy This practical workshop focuses on the backbone of fiction writing--evoking setting, using description to best effect and developing the author's narrative voice in ways that don't intrude into the story. Topics covered will include: telling details, how to layer description rather than "dump" it on the reader, selecting and utilizing the best setting for your story and narrative and narration. Participants should bring pen and paper for completing exercises.
Fiction Writing Essentials
Heather Buchanan
The purpose of this fiction writing workshop is to provide hands-on writing activities on thetopic of creating powerful fiction that resonates with readers. The workshop is open to writers at all levels and covers the opening, point of view, setting & foreshadowing, plot & conflict, successful scenes, character psychology, dialogue, and the ending. New work will be generated in the workshop.
Crafting the Synopsis
Anita Richmond Bunkley
Crafting a vivid, shortened version of a full length book is a daunting task for aspiring and experienced writers, but it is the most lucrative, cost-effective and time-efficient way to snag a contract. In my workshop students will CREATE a first draft of their synopsis.
Storybuilding: Write the Stage Play
Cherryl Floyd-Miller
Participants will use hands-on exercises to develop characters and build storylines for one-act or full-length stage plays. The workshop, designed for beginning and intermediate dramatic writers, has as its aim helping writers turn their "ideas" for a stage play into a solid work-in-progress. Through facilitator discussion, small group exercises and brief individual writing assignments, we will work together to make this workshop your "written start" toward completed a stage play. NOTE: Participants will need to come with paper and pens, or laptops because the focus will be on writing.
Selecting an Editor: Editing Styles and Editor Types
Shana Murph
If you've ever searched for an editor, you may have already learned that all of us aren't created equal. In fact, you may know that you need an editor but don't know how to go about looking for one. Whether you're self-publishing or getting your manuscript or article in tip-top shape for a publisher, there are many issues you need to be aware of to secure the right editor for your project. Having a good editor could determine your writing success.
There are self-taught editors, industry-trained editors, specialty editors, writer-editors, managing editors, proofreaders, copyeditors, and many other classifications and editing styles. Find out what you need to know so that your project doesn't end up in the wrong hands. After attending, participants will be able develop criteria tailored to meet the needs of their individual projects and find the editor type and style they need.
