since no 1 else has so far, i guess it's up 2 me 2 start a movie thread.  i hv a confession 2 make:  i am a movie luver.  it may b an obcession, i'm not sure.  but it's 4 sho an additiction.  few things giv me the pleasure of curling up n a big soft comfy chair with the snacks n place & watching a gr8 film.  of course, i've watched my share of duds too.  it's rare 4 me 2 actually "go" 2 the movies these days, but it does happen.

most of the time i "go" right here @ home - hey, thats y big screens were invented.  at home i don't hv 2 worry bout: loud conversations; smokers, thou this is less of a problem now; parking; vandelism 2 my car while i'm inside the movie; overpriced food (unless i brought som home w me); cell phones going off (that aren't mine, lol); etc.

i'm not going to do a top ten list, thou some others may wish to, b/c there r simply too many movies i hv loved that com 2 mind right now.  however, i hope this thread will b 4 anything 2 do w movies.  movies u've loved, hated, wish had never been made, or possibly a movie that hasn't been made that u wish would b.  f u mention a movie, please tell us a little about it, since every1 might not hv seen it.  on the other hand, f the movie is current, please don't give everything away about it, since others might b planning 2 view it later.

i am an especially big fan of forign films & will b mentioning several films that som of u hv never heard of.  i luv looking at things from the perspective of other cultures & ppl who don't hv the "amerikkkan" viewpoint of politics of the world & it's customs.  whether u agree or disagree w my asessment or critique of any film, i hope u'll participate.  we don't hv 2 hv the same evaluation of the films i mention - i didn't produce any of them, i'm jus a viewer & fan.

:topclap::topclap::topclap::topclap::topclap:
an oldie but goodie, esp if u like war movies, but would like 2 c something different.  this is 1 of the most unusual war movies u'll ever c.  even f ur not a kirk douglass fan, i guarantee u will b impressed w his performance n this film.  f u r a stanley kubrik fan (he directed it, & i hv ALL his films), u will also enjoy this, 1 of his older projects.  the storyline centers around the proposed attack on the ant hill - an entrenched enemy fortress - & the impossibility of any semblance of success from the outset.  however, ambitions r involved & decisions r made, which of course, r 2 b carried out by the grunts, many of whom r slaughtered needlessly.  this is the 2nd greatest war film i've ever seen.

:topclap::topclap::topclap::topclap:
john singleton's movie about what happened at this florida town in 1925 is mesmerising f not surprising.  the acting is top notch, esp from don cheadle and ving rhames - an actor we c far too little of n films these days.  although this tru story singles out 1 community at 1 point n history, it typifies the prevailing attitude of the entire nation around this time. we watch as a yt woman yells rape, accuses a black male, & u can guess what ensues.  although all the blacks run, they manage to retain som measure of dignity &, n their own way, make a stand while fleeing the destruction of the black part of the town.  the film is well done, although in the end, there is little to cheer about, other than singletons ability to convey this much needed to b told tale.

:topclap::topclap::topclap::topclap::topclap:
f this isn't the best forign film i've ever seen, it's certainly n the top 2 or 3.  the police r investigating a murder.  but these aren't ur usual police, & this 4 sho isn't ur usual murder.  virtually everything about this mystery is different, but in a wonderfully captivating way. once again, most of the actors will b unfamiliar (except 1, who is currently on tv) to amerikkkan audiences, thou they r well established in europe (most of them anyway) but they giv superb performances which will draw u n2 their world.  several sub plots keep this otherwise slow paced film full of intrigue.  there isn't a lot of action - there r no car crashes & zero shoot-em-ups, so f that's paramount, c a different film.  but f u lean toward cerebral creativity & moral dilemas, this is a treat u will savor.  som of u r probably thinking, 'how good could it be f i never heard of it?'.  u will b pleasantly surprised, trust me.

AMADEUS

:topclap::topclap::topclap::topclap::topclap:
i said i wouldn't do a top ten list, at least i won't do 1 right now, but whenever i do do 1, i predict this film will not only b on the list, but it will hoover near the top.  i like to play a sort of game w myself whenever i watch a movie.  after viewing it, i find all the ways i can think of, f it was a good film, to improve on it.  this was probably the 1st & only film i've ever seen where i was unable to come up w any significan improvements i could make (other than the inclusion of som BLACK actors & actresses).  this is 1 movie that actually deserved all 8 (yes, eight) oscars it won.  it would hv won best picture in any year it came out, so, the other nominee's were jus unlucky they came out the same year.  it's full of actors u've never heard of, or at least i'd never heard of, but the story is so totally engrossing u hardly notice the almost 3 hrs running time, or at least i didn't.  far from the stiff, upper crust, boring historical account of 1 of europe's "gr8" musicians, this film humanizes mozart & brings his music, & his story, to life in a way not open to other mediums.  the film is a triumph & a tour de force for the narrator, f murry abraham.  he is simply amazing n giving the performance of a lifetime n this film.  who knew he was even capable of attaining such heights?

those r a few outstanding films i've seen.  mor 2 com.  any1 else?

oh, btw, i recently viewed jarhead :topclap::topclap:, underground evolution :topclap:, & hostel :topclap::topclap: , none of which were, imho, much of anything other than a mild diversion.

:cool:

This past Friday I had the opportunity to see V for Vendetta.  Very interesting movie. It made some valid points as to where we are possibly headed (as a people). This movie is set in the future and is lossely based upon the comic book character V.

hvn't seen that 1 yet.  now, how we gonna kno whether ur recommending we c it w/o u given us how many :topclap:'s u giv it?

this is my own silly visions movie rating system:  5:topclap:'s is my highest rating, while 1:topclap: is really low.  (f the movie only gets 1, that means i basically think it wasn't worth seeing even 4 free)

friday i viewed ghosts of Mississippi; whoppi gives an outstanding portrayal of merle evers n her prolonged struggle 2 hv her husbands murder brought 2 justice.  the conclusion is dramatic & moving (even thou u pretty much already kno the outcome).  she really makes this movie.  of course, it's a gr8 story to tell.

May 2006 is TCM's Evening Theme: RACE AND HOLLYWOOD. I've set my calendar to watch the first all black movies cast that will be airing every Tuesday and Thursday for the month of May

The moives I watch last night were

Hallelujah filmed in 1929

A black laborer turns preacher after accidentally killing a man.

Green Pasture filmed in 1936                                                                                     God tests the human race in this reenactment of Bible stories set in the world of black American folklore.

Now what I found so interesting was the fact I got upset at the condtion, and was about to turn to another station, but then I had to open my mind and listen. I had to know and get  a clear understand of the life style of my people during thoses times. Like the way they spoke, the jobs and meals they perpare. And I got to see how a cotton mill operate. How cotton was picked then taken  to the Gin, made into a bundle, and rolled on to ships.

Just click on the lick to get and ideal of the other vantage Black Movies that will be airing this months. http://www.turnerclassicmovies.com/schedule/index.jsp?startDate=5/4/2006&timezone=EST&cid==

akeelah & the B

:topclap::topclap::topclap::topclap::topclap:

u only think u kno the ending - u really don't.  i admit i walked n2 this film w only mediocre xpectations & was stunned by the outocme.  keke palmer, playing akeelah, finds stardom n this role, & i believe it is jus the beginning 4 her.  playing less like a child & mor like som1 w an adults range & repitoire, she literally carries the film & u won't b dissappointed.  sure, u kno gong n it's a 'feel good' movie & there will b plenty of 'kleenx moments', & yes, this story has been told many times b4 - but not this well or as touchingly.  it's a real pleaure to c so many black ppl all together n 1 film again.  my only complaint is angela bassat's role is sorely underdeveloped, leaving her w mostly uni-dimensional emotions & behaviors to exhibit.  she is capable of so much mor & is talented far beyond this role.  y this beautiful, master actress doesn't receive mor substantial roles - especially as she is beginning 2 exit her prime years - is beyond me.

lawrence puts his subtlle, softer side on display once again n this film, which is somewhat ironic given his immense size these days.  nevertheless, it is keke whom we grow 2 cherish & hunger to c mor of as the film progresses.  you feel for this child, and could watch her perform for as long as her energy permits.  she does not dissappoint.  i won't giv the ending away, but suffice to say, n this role, she demonstrates, throughout fhe film & particularly @ the end, that her precociousness goes far beyond her ability to spell words.

go.  by all means, please go.  take the kids - not jus urs but any & all u can accomodate & manage.  they will thank u 4 it.
