Progressive hip hop artists Mos Def, dead prez, and
the Coup will perform on Tuesday,
January 24th at the opening session of the World
Social Forum in Caracas, Venezuela. On Wednesday,
January 25th the Trio of artists along with members of
the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement will be
participating in three workshops.
The first workshop is being conducted by the People's
Hurricane Relief Fund and Oversight Coalition from
8:30 am - 11:30 am is entitled "The Right of Return:
the Work of the People's Hurricane Relief Fund and
Oversight Coalition". The second workshop to be held
from 12 - 3 pm is entitled, "Hip Hop and the Black
Liberation Movement in the United States". The third
workshop will be held from 7 - 8 pm and is entitled
"Political Prisoners in the United States". The Trio
will also be performing Wednesday night at a free
community event for the people of Caracas and the
international delegates to the World Social Forum.
The Trio of artists represents a delegation of the
Black August Hip Hop Collective, which is a collective
of hip hop artists organized by the Malcolm X
Grassroots Movement to support its annual Black August
Hip Hop Benefit Concerts. The Black August Hip Hop
Benefit Concerts raise awareness and funds in defense
of political prisoners in the United States from the
Black Panther Party, the Black Liberation Army, the
Republic of New Afrika, and the MOVE organization. The
delegation is being organized by the Malcolm X
Grassroots Movement, ANHK Marketing, PODER (People
Organized to Win Environmental and Economic Rights),
and Grassroots Global Justice.
The Black August Hip Hop Collective delegation is also
pursuing the possibility of hosting the 9th Annual
Black August International Hip Hop Exchange in
Venezuela in August 2006. Black August 2006 and the
9th Annual International Exchange will focus on
building international solidarity, particularly from
Latin America, for an international tribunal to pursue
justice after Hurricane Katrina against President Bush
and the United States Government for their human
rights crimes against the predominantly African
American and working class communities of the Gulf
Coast. The international tribunal on Hurricane Katrina
is being pursued by a broad coalition which includes
the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, the Peoples
Hurricane Relief Fund and Oversight Coalition, the
Mississippi Disaster Relief Coalition, and the Black
Activist Network on Hurricane Katrina.
Good to see the Black August Movement extending from the US to Cuba to Venezuela.
A Luta Continua!
