Posted June 27, 2006 -- “It’s All In The Stars” was the theme for the 2006 BET Awards, and the stars were definitely out Tuesday night.
The Sixth Annual BET Awards at Los Angeles’ historic Shrine Auditorium was a star-studded event from start to finish. Celebs, including David Banner, Boris Kodjoe, Vivica A. Fox and Nas, strolled the red carpet, while live performances by such acts as LeToya Luckett, Cherish, Common and Dem Franchize Boyz during the “106 & Park” Red Carpet telecast got viewers ready for the big event.
“106 & Park” hosts Big Tigger and Julissa took viewers behind the velvet ropes during the pre-awards telecast, while G.O.O.D. Music artist Fonzworth Bentley helped BET.com users get up close and personal with their favorite artist on the live Red Carpet stream on BET on Blast. Anthony Hamilton had the distinction of being first twice in one night. During the pre-awards telecast, he walked away with the first award handed out during the evening, which also happened to be the first ever BET J “Cool Like That” honor.
Beyonce worked the crowd into frenzy when she opened the show with a sizzling performance of her new single, “Déjà vu.” She shimmied and sang her way across the stage before being joined by her famous beau, Jay-Z. Beyonce’s hot number provided the perfect opening for the evening’s festivities.
Damon Wayans hosted the show, keeping audiences entertained with his wry sense of humor. Consistent with the BET Awards’ “anything-can-happen” history, audiences were surprised when Janet Jackson joined her former “Good Times” cast mates Jimmie “JJ” Walker, BerNadette Stanis and Ralph Carter on stage to present the award for Best Female Hip Hop artist to Missy Elliott.
Another highlight of the evening was the shockingly passionate kiss shared between Fantasia and Jamie Foxx during his sexy rendition of “DJ Play a Love Song.” Keeping things hot, audiences enjoyed show-stopping performances from Ne-Yo, Mary Mary and Yung Joc. Busta Rhymes surprised audiences when he was joined by Eminem as he performed “Touch It (remix).”
India.Arie, Yolanda Adams, Prince and Stevie Wonder were on hand to pay tribute to Chaka Khan, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award, while Danny Glover helped honor Harry Belafonte with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Other winners of the evening were Kanye West, Mary J. Blige, T.I. and the Viewer’s Choice award winner, Chris Brown.
Just when it seemed that things were cooling off, Prince delivered an exhilarating closing medley, sending the night’s winners, honorees and attendees off into the night.
If you missed any of the 2006 BET Awards, tune in for the re-broadcast on June 30 at 7:30 p.m. (ET/PT).

| I DIDN'T GET TOT SEE ALL OF IT FROM START TO FINISH, BUT FOR ME (FROM A MUSICAL STAND POINT), MY FAVORITE MOMENT WAS THE TRIBUTE TO CHAKA KHAN. HOW OFTEN DO YOU SEE A CALBORATION OF THAT MAGNITUDE? ESPECIALLY WHEN PRINCE BROKE IT DOWN LEADING TO THE SONG "TELL ME SOMTHIN' GOOD". AS IT IS, PRINCE AND STEVIE WONDER ARE LEGENDS IN THIER OWN RIGHT, BUT TO HAVE THEM ON THE SAME STAGE AT THE SAME TIME!! ALONG WITH YOLANDA ADAMS, & INDIA ARIE WHO ALREADY ARE A MARK IN THE MUSIC WORLD. I COULDN'T SEE A BETTER SETUP TO HAPPEN THAN THAT. IF PEOPLE CAN REMAIN OPEN-MINDED AND JUST BE ABOUT THE MUSIC, ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!!
